As much as we’d love to say “beach reads,” living smack dab in the middle of the country doesn’t always qualify us for living the beach life. But poolside, yes.
And with kids who are old enough and competent enough to swim, that means L I V I N’. However, it means not being upset if you’re in the thick of a whodunnit and your kids start dunking each other under water. So books need to be easy to look away from.
Are you able to read at the pool? What are some of your favorites? Keep reading for a list on our stacks…
For the witchy woman who’s not afraid to flaunt it (in her all black bathing suit and black wrap and black Turkish towel…that’s Nicole):
How to Deal: Tarot for Everyday Life
This beginner’s tarot is whimsical, and relatable. With room for journaling and deeper exploration of your daily stresses and excitements, this is a fun book to flip through. Need a good tarot deck to get you started? The Rider Tarot Deck is always a good one.
The Good Witch’s Guide: A Modern-Day Wiccapedia of Magickal Ingredients and Spells (The Modern-Day Witch)
This pretty hardback is a fun primer of all things magickal. Herbs! Crystals! Starting your own Grimoire! My copy is already dog-eared and bookmarked. Did I mention it’s pretty, too?
Versailles Journal (Notebook, Diary)
If you’re going to be reading reference materials, you might as well get a beautiful journal to hold all your notes. These Peter Pauper Press journals are GORGEOUS. I bought one for a mere $11 (they should be $30 based on how nice they are), and then ordered two more.
For the reader who loves flowers and plants:
A beautiful recipe book on flower arranging. Inspiring, for any level of florist. Our flower-farmin’ mama has this on her coffee table right now, and I may have tried to steal it from her.
An engrossing autobiography of a woman scientist, struggling with mental health issues and engaging layman to botany. Maybe not as easy to pick up and put down, but worth adding to the list!
Selina Lake: Garden Style: Inspirational Styling for your Outside Space
We LOVE LOVE LOVE us some Selina Lake. Her more-is-more style is charming and wonderful, and she has the best eye for putting it all together. Her new Garden Style book is drool worthy.
For the graphic novel lover who isn’t worried about their young children flipping through ‘comic books’:
This sci-fi futuristic graphic novel is creepy, thrilling, and head scratching. Perfect for a one-sitting session at the pool. The second in the series comes out in a few months.
Magicians! Evil wizards! Shapeshifters! This is a (literally) charming book that defies genres and expectations. Also a fun read.
Lumberjanes Vol. 1: Beware The Kitten Holy
A quintet of summer campers fighting supernatural crime and kicking a$$. This is a fun series that is TOTALLY FINE for your 6-year-old daughter to flip through (as opposed to Bitch Planet, which sparked necessary conversations about gender and patriarchy, but maybe not for a 6yo…)
Stay tuned for more picks! What are some of your favorites? Please share, we’d love to compile a list and feature them!
